“I am the Walrus!”

Who are you and what do you do?

We’re Sabba, Amneet , Sofia, Simone, Holly and Shamaila and together we make one fat Walrus. We make zines about very important things like deadly mosquitos, head scarves, underachieving frogs, the circus and even the plague. Three of us met while working at Harrods but we don’t want to talk about it. We all love DIY zine culture because it allows unqualified people like our selves to pass off as rad illustrators who purposely draw crap.

Where are you based?

We are based in London

How did you get started in self publishing?

A few of us were working on stuff individually that we were photocopying and giving to friends but then one day many years ago Simone introduced us to the Alternative Press Fair, that’s when we realized there was a whole scene with exciting people doing the same thing. We decided to make a collective because we wanted to work on projects together and thought it would be nice to bring all our zines together to sell at zine fairs, our work and drawing styles are quite different but we think they make a nice collection. We’ve continued going to zine fairs ever since then and have become more and more involved over the years, our very own Amneet has even become an esteemed member of the IAPF massive.

What inspires your work?

the spirit of animals, feminist issues, folk tales, religion, science and chaos

Is this a good time of year for the Walrus?

This is a very good time of year for the Walrus. We’ve recently teamed up with IAPF’s Rose Nordin to try and make the best zine ever, or a very good one at least, and are busy producing our cutting edge content, hopefully we’ll be launching it in September. We’re also very excited about the IAPF Zine Fair, we’ve got our recycled paper ready and are working on our zine printing strategy for the week ahead. Roll on the zine fair!
